The Donna North T-STEM Academy is a small, personalized cohort of 130 students that will receive rigorous and relevant curriculum, meeting the requirements of state standards, college and career standards, 21st century learning skills, and an emphasis on the STEM pathway. It is the goal of the academy to reach out to ALL current 8th grade students at Sauceda Middle School and Veterans Middle School during their spring semester and introduce students and develop their interest in a STEM education. Students will then be provided the opportunity to submit an application to be admitted into the Academy.
Recruitment Timeline
Middle School Recruitment Visits - February 2019 (4th Week)
Donna North T-STEM Academy Coordinator, Counselor, Teacher(s), and Students will visit Sauceda Middle School and Veterans Middle School to recruit students interested in the T-STEM Academy. Students interested in being part of the T-STEM Academy will receive an application to be filled out and signed by the student and parent/guardian.
Application Submission - March 2019 (3rd Week)
Interested students will submit their T-STEM applications to their 8th grade counselor during the 4th week of March. The 8th grade counselor will then submit all COMPLETED applications to the T-STEM Coordinator or Counselor.
Student Notification - April 2019 (3rd Week)
Students selected for the new T-STEM Academy cohort will be notified and a welcome letter will be addressed to the parent/guardian and student. The students will be provided with a calendar of upcoming events, including Teacher/Student Orientation and Summer Bridge dates.
Parent/Student Orientation - May 2019 (1st Week)
A parent/student orientation will be held at Donna North High School to introduce parents and students to the T-STEM Academy. Parents and students will be provided with a campus tour and will hear from current T-STEM students about the advantages of being part of the T-STEM family. Parents and students will be provided information on important dates, expectations, graduation plans, and college courses available at Donna North High School.
T-STEM Summer Bridge Program - June 2019 (2nd Week)
Incoming T-STEM Academy students are highly encouraged to attend the 1 week Summer Bridge Program during the 2nd week of June. Students will learn more about STEM education, Project-Based Learning, College and Career Interests, TSI, and their graduation plans.
